This ancient wonder holds a magnificence unto itself. The genus is made up of many species that range in size as well as having distinct flower variations in the colour and shape of their cone. The name Protea originates from the Greek Legend of Proteus, a Greek God who could change his form at will. This seems appropriate given the significant variations of form within the Protea family. Proteas form the taller canopy in South African Fynbos vegetation. Their nectar attracts birds, bees and insects, all vital to the natural ecosystem.
